William Shimer & Sons Co. Cast Iron No. 15 Donkey Drawn “Dumping Cart” Coal Wagon
We have for you a cast iron donkey-drawn “Dumping Cart” coal cart/wagon that was manufactured by William Shimer & Sons Company of Freemansburg, Pennsylvania. We were able to fid this in the Shimer 1905 catalog (as seen in the pictures). It is also a close match to an Ives donkey-drawn coal cart.
There is beautiful Japanning on the donkey and the paint has stood the test of time. The driver is a replacement. All accessories seen in the photograph are included.
This piece is in great all original condition with no breaks, restorations, repairs, or touch-ups. This piece shows the usual patina, fading, dust, chips, scuffs, surface rust, scratches, missing accessories, and wear that are to be expected from age and play. This is approximately 13 13 ¼” L. A brief history of William Shimer & Sons Company of Freemansburg, Pennsylvania:
William Shimer & Sons Company of Freemansburg, Pennsylvania was founded by William Shimer and was in operation from 1875-1913. Shimer manufactured a line of cast iron toys including banks, trains, horse-drawn toys, and a few small automobiles around 1909-1910. Their toys often featured front foot oscillating mechanisms on the horses or oxen. Firecracker cannons made by Shimer & Sons Co. carried a patent date of April 23, 1895. They were made in a whole series of graduated sizes. After a fire that destroyed the factory, Shimer closed its doors in 1913.
