Tin German tin windup train by SG. SG is also known as Gunthermann (Günthermann) and was known for excellent quality toys at a fair price. This windup features a large spring to scoot the floor train across the floor.
Condition is very good to excellent with original paint and glossy finish. The windup works well and toy properly functions. Paint chips present on high ridges on the right and left wheel arches. Gray paint darkening from age on wheels.
Beautiful detail on the yellow lithographed “whistle and piping” on the upper right and left side and side of boiler and cab. Wonderful lithographed gauge set within the cab with detail of the boiler door and handles.
All things Gunthermann are sought after, and this represents a fabulous condition toy at a fair price. The toy is over 100 years old!

Founder: Sifried Gunthermann
Specialty: Began producing tinplate mechanical cars in 1898; also a number of comic and character wind-ups in the early 1960s. When founder died in 1890, his widow married Adolph Weigel; toys from that period on bore makers mark with a shield inside circle and initials A.S.G.W. Wiegels initials were removed following his death in 1919. Company was acquired by Siemens in 1965.
