Osaka Tin Toy Institute Tin Lithographed Battery Operated “Mechanized Robot” Robby the Robot in Box
What an iconic toy! Â This guy is everything the Baby Boomers have dreamed up, wrapped in a slick black package. Â Our Robby, aka Forbidden Planet Robot, aka Mechanized Robot Battery Operated robot is new old stock from the Osaka Tin Toy Institute.
If you didn’t know, OTTI or Osaka Tin Toy Institute worked with key figures stateside like Ray Rohr and Jim Chapin. Â The original factory workers in Japan worked with original factories (the few left) to produce these in the 1990’s. Â They took selections from the Ray Rohr collection often and then remastered the toys to the near-original spec.
Our Mechanized robot is a copy of Robby the Robot film bot. Robby the Robot is a fictional character and science fiction icon who first appeared in the 1956 film Forbidden Planet.
Our toy simply has an extra label inside the battery box showing its OTTI origins. Â Other than that, it seems so new and perfect. Â It will stand shoulder to shoulder with the original and we would have a hard time telling them apart. Â Even the box was a copy of the original and differs due to a small OTTI badge on the right bottom corner.
Here’s a nice slice of history from Wikipedia: “Robby the Robot is a fictional character and science fiction icon who first appeared in the 1956 film Forbidden Planet. He made a number of subsequent appearances in science fiction movies and television programs, usually without specific reference to the original film character.”
